- GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: heartwood pale grayish brown to very pale brown, distinct from the white to pale sapwood. The sapwood may become light brownish gray due to fungi attack. Slightly distinct growth rings, grain interlocked, texture medium, luster lacking and not distinctive odor.
- DENSITY: medium density wood, with density at 12% moisture content of 780 kg/m3 and green density of 1,170 kg/m3.
- DRYING: air-dries slowly, with a tendency for checking. Kiln-dries very slowly, with a slight tendency for superficial checking, medium cupping and bowing, pronounced springing and collapse and moderate tendency for pronounced twisting, when submitted to the drying schedule 2.
- WORKABILITY: difficult to work with hand and machine tools. Rough surface in planing due to interlocked grain. Finishes well with paint, varnish, polishing and fillers. May cause dermatitis in workmen.
- DURABILITY: highly resistant to termites and fungi.
- PRESERVATION: sapwood easy to be preserved with creosote and heartwood not treatable with creosote or CCA-A, even with pressure-vaccum systems.
- USES: civil and naval constructions, window and door frames, truck bodies and others.
